Hello,
I don't know German so hopefully you'll forgive me :), but I think most of you will be interested in this.
I spent last few weeks up ***** data information about Bosnian Premijer liga, with the main focus on the goals and assists. We had lineups, substitutes, cards and goal scorers, but we didn't have bench information, and we didn't have types of goals scored and especially - no info about assists.
I set on the task of adding that information and today I finally finished with the last round played (Matchday 17.).
As some of you know, all of the goals from the Premijer liga games are shown in a Sunday TV show and are available online. In addition, some game videos are available from other sources, and some whole games are even available. I used these videos to determine the assists and types of goals, and managed to get information about all of them, except maybe 3-4 questionable goals.
There are many interpretations of assists. To determine an assist here, I mostly followed FIFA World Cup rules (here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assist_%28football%29).
This is what I counted as an assist:
- last player that passed, headed or crossed the ball towards the scorer
- player that had a shot on goal that was saved by a goalie, blocked by a defender, or bounced off the goal post, back to the scorer (unless it bounced back to the same player that scored)
- player that was fouled for the penalty (unless that player scored from penalty)
- player that kicked or headed the ball that was then scored by an own goal
- player that passed or crossed the ball directly to the goal scorer from a free kick or corner
I did not count as an assist players that were fouled outside of penalty box, from which free kicks were awarded that resulted in a goal. Also, I did not count as assists situations where a player last touched the ball before it was handled by a defender, then given a penalty that was converted into goal.
I also did not count as assists any situations where a player was not the last person that touched the ball before the goal scorer. For example, a corner that was rebounded and then ball went to another player that scored. Also, a pass to a player that had more than one attempt at a goal (kicked once, the ball rebounded, then kicked again and scored). Finally, I did not count as assists any situations where the scorer dribbled through one or more players and then scored.
I spent hours and hours looking through some videos and news reports and I'm certain that 99% of what I did is correct. I carefully looked at each occasion and a player that last touched the ball. I watched the the videos, and if the commentator didn't name the player who assisted, then I would try to figure it out from the video (I know, all the videos are terrible quality). If I couldn't, then I would look at various newspaper reports, websites, club pages, and even forums. Luckily, almost all the goals and assists were recorded except maybe 5%. Only one game video (played on a Monday) is not available anywhere online . I looked at some sources like Avaz that also supposedly count assists and I have no idea how they came up with their counts which are totally different than mine. Often times I would notice even a commentator would say a wrong name of a player, so I can't imagine newspapers being any better. Often times also an article would say something like: "Player A crossed the ball into the box, which Player B converted into a goal". When you watch the replay, you would see that ball actually hit a defender in the box, maybe even bounced around a while, someone had a shot on goal, and only then Player B would score. So in reality, Player A was not really the one who assisted the goal. These situations are fairly common, so I can only imagine would "sports journalists" would count as assists.
In any case, I'm pretty sure nobody spent this much time carefully following each assist.
Another thing that I added to the data - is the info about types of goals and types of assists.
Now, the script gives you many options, but some are rather dubious. I wanted to make it simple and delineate only the goals by which part of body they were scored. I did that in this way because many websites count exactly the percentage of goals scored by right foot, left foot, and headers. Also, it is a lot of times questionable what really is a "tap in" and not a shot. Because of this, I excluded all the "solo-runs", "tap-ins" and so forth. The only other types of goals I included separately were penalty kicks and direct free kicks. Besides these 2 categories everything else is either head, left foot or right foot. Except one goal that was basically scored by the crotch of a player :) which I added as a "tap in", for lack of a better word. :)
With regards to the assists, I called everything a "pass" unless the ball was whipped in from side into the box and through the air (not on the ground), which would be a "cross". If the ball was last headed for the assist I would of course record it as "header", and of course "Penalty-fouled player", "corner" and "free kick" categories are self-explanatory.

I will continue following the league and keep adding this info.
